Overview
This tour puts a tandem skydive over Wanaka within reach of travellers based in Queenstown. Check in at the NZONE Skydive Centre on Shotover Street in central Queenstown, then ride a coach to Wanaka Airport, a drive of roughly an hour and a half. After a safety briefing you are fitted with a jumpsuit and introduced to the Tandem Master you will be strapped to for the jump.
Three altitudes are on offer: 9,000, 12,000 or 15,000 feet, with freefall of up to 25, 45 or 60 seconds depending on the height chosen. After the canopy opens there is around five minutes drifting down, with the operator promising sightlines across as many as six lakes, the Southern Alps and beyond to Mount Cook on clear days. No previous skydiving experience is needed.
The whole outing runs up to six hours door to door, and it suits first timers who want scenery rather than just altitude numbers. It is not for very young children: the minimum age is six, the minimum weight is 30kg, and anyone under twelve jumps from 9,000 feet only. You meet the Skydive Wanaka transfer at 35 Shotover Street rather than being collected from a hotel.

What To Expect From The Tour
A few practical points shape the day, from weather calls to what you can carry on the plane.
- Getting there. Skydive Wanaka does not offer hotel pickup. Check in at 35 Shotover Street in central Queenstown, and return transfers from that meeting point to Wanaka Airport are part of the package.
- Weather flexibility. Every skydive depends on suitable conditions. Book your first available day in Wanaka and keep a backup day free, and if you cannot rearrange you receive a full refund.
- On the day. You are weighed at the dropzone and must fit securely into the harness. Everyone is also subject to Tandem Master assessment before jumping.
- What to wear. Closed-toe shoes are required. Jumpsuit, frap hat, goggles, gloves and harness are all provided, along with lockers for valuables at the dropzone.
- Photos and video. Personal cameras are not allowed on the jump. An Ultimate photo and video package with two cameras can be bought at the dropzone, on most flights.
- Children. The minimum age is six and the minimum weight is 30kg. Children under twelve can only jump from 9,000 feet.
Common issues. The main uncertainty is weather, and the operator explicitly advises holding a spare day in case the jump cannot run. Hotel pickup is excluded, so you need to reach Shotover Street on your own. Personal cameras are not permitted, and the photo and video package costs extra and is only available on most flights. The long coach legs to Wanaka and back mean a fair chunk of the day is spent travelling rather than in the air.
Common Questions
Is Transport From Queenstown Included?
Return coach transfers between central Queenstown and Wanaka Airport are included. Hotel pickup is not, so you make your own way to the meeting point at 35 Shotover Street.
Do I Need Skydiving Experience?
No. No previous skydiving experience is necessary, and you jump attached to an experienced tandem master after a safety briefing.
How Long Does Freefall Last?
Between 25 and 60 seconds depending on whether you jump from 9,000, 12,000 or 15,000 feet. After the canopy opens you spend roughly five minutes descending.
Can Children Do This Skydive?
Yes, from age six and a minimum weight of 30kg, but children under twelve may only jump from 9,000 feet. Children under six cannot take part.
What Happens If The Weather Is Bad?
All skydives depend on favourable conditions. The operator suggests booking your first available day and keeping another free, and if you cannot rearrange you get a full refund.
What Is The Cancellation Policy?
You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. Cameras are not allowed on the jump itself, and the photo and video package is sold separately at the dropzone.
